Kenny Garrett went home with his Lord on Monday, April 13, 2026. A Mathews native, Kenny was a dedicated member of the Mathews Volunteer Fire Department for 53 years and was named Firefighter of the Year in 1989, 1990, 1994, 1997, 2002, and 2025. Kenny was a lifelong member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church in Bohannon, Virginia.
He is preceded in death by his father, Calvin Garrett; his mother, Lois Garrett; an older brother, Dale Garrett; his grandfather, Charlie Hill, and his grandmother, Mabel Hill.
He leaves behind his wife of 30 years, Rebecca Garrett; a sister, Susan Hillard (Mitchell); a brother, Steve Garrett; a sister-in-law, Vicki Garrett; two stepdaughters, Elizabeth Collins and Miriam Frost (Lars); five beloved grandchildren, Shannon Craven (Matthew), Aaron James, Savannah Collins, Ethan Frost and Lydia Frost; four nephews and a niece, Mitch Hilliard, Curtis Hilliard (Tiffany), Gage Garrett (Clara), Matthew Garrett (Renee), Sheree Celestino (Ryan).
The family will receive friends on Sunday, April 19, 2026, from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. at Thomas Hunter Middle School, 387 Church Street, Mathews, Virginia 23109, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 p.m. at the school. Burial will follow in Providence Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mathews Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 1130, Mathews, Virginia 23109, so they may continue his legacy of service. Donations may also be made to Emmanuel United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 628, North, Virginia 23128. Faulkner Funeral Homes, Foster-Faulkner Chapel, is assisting the family.
