Cloyde Wiley

October 19, 1927 — November 1, 2023

Cloyde William Wiley, Jr. of Urbanna and Irvington, VA passed away on November 1, 2023.  Born in 1927 in Lynchburg, VA, he graduated from E. C. Glass High School and Lynchburg College where he met and married the mother of his four boys, Gene Clayton Wiley. Life's path led Cloyde and Gene to build wonderful lives in both the Town of Urbanna and New Kent, VA where they made many lifelong friends and became an integral part of those communities.  After serving in the army during World War II as a surgical technician in Germany, Cloyde's storied career with the Virginia Department of Health started in 1952 as a Shellfish Sanitarian aboard the State's new laboratory boat, the Louis Pasteur with offices in Irvington and then Whitestone.  After 38 years Cloyde retired as the Director of Shellfish Sanitation culminating a career dedicated to protecting the shellfish enjoyed by Virginia consumers and beyond.

Retirement drew Cloyde and Gene back to Urbanna once again until Gene's death in 2004.  With much love left to give, Cloyde met Ethel Musbach at an Alzheimer’s support group meeting, they married in 2005 and together enjoyed 14 years of marriage.

Cloyde was a kind, gentle soul with a strong moral compass and a zest for life and all its beauty.  He was genuine, caring, interested in all and cherished sharing his life with those he loved. He enjoyed the water, camping, hunting, antiquing, traveling, and especially being with his family.

Cloyde was preceded in death by his wife Gene, his second wife Ethel, his parents Cloyde and Margaret, his brother Peyton, his son David, his son Cloyde, III, and his grandson Lee.

He is survived by his brother Ivan; his sons Boyd (Brenda) and Bruce (Sharon); his daughter-in-law Barbara Hartley; his grandchildren Christina, Clay (Lauren), Jessie, Tim (Tara) and Scott (Kristen); and his great-grandchildren Jaelyn, Sidney, Colin, Regan, Lawson, Quinn, Grace, Carson, June and Callie.
Other surviving family members include Don and Rick (Diane) Musbach, honorary son Don Glasser and the children and grandchildren of Brenda and Barbara who held a special place in his heart.

A funeral service will be held at St. Peters Church, 8400 St. Peters Lane, New Kent, VA 23124 at 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 11, 2023, with burial in the churchyard followed by a reception in the parish hall.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, P.O. Box 96011, Washington, DC 20090-6011.
