Harriet Susan Armistead Whitener, 89, of Bavon, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 5, 2025, at Riverside Regional Medical Center.
Born on April 6, 1936, Harriet lived a life rooted in love, service, and community. She dedicated 25 years of her career to Mathews High School, where she was a beloved and dependable presence. Her calm demeanor, kind heart, and unwavering dedication left a lasting impact on generations of students. Whether working behind the scenes or cheering from the sidelines, Harriet had a gift for making young people feel seen, supported, and valued. Her involvement extended beyond the workday, as she volunteered tirelessly at school sporting events, especially volleyball and football, where her presence became a comforting constant for students, staff, and families.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry Bland Armistead and Myrle Ripley Armistead; her son, Mark Bland Whitener; and her grandson, Brandon Michael Lowery.
She is survived by her three children, David C. Whitener (Susan), Stephen M. Whitener, and Susan W. Lowery, and her cherished grandchildren, Daniel, Dennis, and Matthew (Darci). Known for her meticulous nature and strong sense of order, Harriet took pride in maintaining a tidy home and yard, picking up pinecones religiously, without fail. Her presence was quiet but steadfast, and her love for her family and community was unwavering.
Harriet was a faithful member of Beulah Methodist Church, where she found strength in her faith and fellowship with her church family.
Harriet’s legacy is one of dedication, kindness, and quiet strength. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Memorial services will be announced at a later date.
