Helen Hockaday Longest, 90, of St. Stephens Church, VA died Saturday, December 13, 2025, at her home, Goshen Farm, surrounded by her family.
Mrs. Longest grew up in Spotsylvania and later became a resident of King and Queen County where she raised her family. She retired in 2015 from King and Queen County as the Commissioner of Revenue after 44 years of service and was a founding member of Aylett Country Day School in Millers Tavern, VA.
Preceding her in death was her husband of 49 years, G. Merl Longest Sr. She is survived by her three daughters, Donna Garrison and her husband, Andy, of Little River S.C., Debbie Miller and her husband, Bryan, of Deltaville, and Diane Pierce and her husband, Rob, of St. Stephens Church; one son, George M. Longest Jr. and his wife, Sandy, of St. Stephens Church; 11 grandchildren, Jenny Moore (Brandon), Andrew Garrison, Bryan Allyn Miller(Jennifer), Ashley Taliaferro (Mark), Blake Miller (Courtney), Sara, Grace and Anna Pierce, Chris Longest (Tiffany), Jason Longest and Woody Johnson (Kelley); 14 great-grandchildren, Milaina and Gavin Moore; Baylen, Benton, and Cayden Miller; Duncan and Luke Taliaferro; Kinsley and Bladen Miller; Millie, Lillie, and Toby Longest; Mason and Owen Johnson. She is also survived by one sister, Catharine Mathis of Spotsylvania; brother-in-law Robert Longest of St. Stephens Church; and sister-in-laws Jean Hitchcock of Mechanicsville, Pauline Swenson of St. Stephens Church and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Roderick and Lottie Hockaday; two brothers Raymond and W. P. Hockaday and two sisters, Ruth Edenton and Leah Jones.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, December 17, at Marks-Bristow Funeral Home, Tappahannock, VA. Burial will follow in the family cemetery at Green Chambers Farm, St. Stephens Church, VA.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 pm at the funeral home on December 17, 2025.
The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation and love to Burnestine Brooks, Cynthia Blagmon, Evelyn Smith, Sandy Wolfrey, Beverly Lovelace and Millie Longest who lovingly provided care for our Mother over the past 20 months.
