Janie Cleaton Gathercole

It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of our wife and mother, Janie Gayle Cleaton Gathercole, 69, on Saturday, January 10, 2026, after a brief illness.

Janie was born on June 7, 1956, and recently retired from VCU Tappahannock Health after 25+ years of faithful duties. She enjoyed camping, gardening, crocheting, crafts, drawing and especially spending time with her friends, family and loving pets.

She is predeceased by her parents, W.A. Cleaton and Lucille Jane Jeans and her beloved son Marshall Stanley Gathercole, as well as her brothers Scott Cleaton and Donnie “Fuzzy” Cleaton.

Janie is survived by her loving husband of 49 years, James Ray Gathercole, Sr. and their children James R. Gathercole, Jr. and wife Crystal and their children Ethan, Brianna, Bronson and Wyatt, all of Houston, Texas, and Benjamin Charles Gathercole, Sr., of Tappahannock. She is also survived by her siblings, Allen Cleaton (Carolyn) of West Virginia, Preston Amburn (Leslie) of King William, Melissa Cleaton Shearwood (Todd) and Cee Cee Cleaton, both of Tappahannock.

The family will receive friends at Faulkner Funeral Home Marks-Bristow Chapel on Tuesday, January 13, from 5-7 p.m., where the funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, January 14, 2026. Burial will follow in the Essex Cemetery, Tappahannock, Virginia.
