John Robert Pierce, 91, of Mathews, Virginia, passed away on Tuesday, May 13, 2025. He was a member of Central United Methodist Church, a 50-plus-year member of Oriental Lodge No. 20, AF & AM, and a member of the Khedive Century Club for being one of the 100 Senior-Most Members of Khedive Shriners. John started his working career by helping his father and brothers on the family farm. Known for his strength and endurance, he was a hard-working man whether he was at home or at work. John worked at various places, including Miles Oyster Company, American Red Ball Moving Company, and then found his lifelong career with Verizon. He enjoyed retirement for 33 years, but stayed very busy helping friends in Mathews County and Newport News, whether it was fishing pounds, leveling fields with his tractor, or helping neighbors with their projects. John Robert was a friendly sort and never met a stranger.
He is preceded in death by his wives, Diana "Donna" Ripley Pierce and Margaret "Peggy" Hudgins Pierce; his parents, Ruben Pierce and Eva Foster Pierce; his siblings, Henley Pierce, Elva Dize, Mabel Simpson, Jack Stillman, Frances Ward, Doris Edwards, Margie Snow, Josephine Clarke, Annie Ruth Collier, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He is survived by his sister-in-law, Mildred Stillman; special nephew, who was loved like a son, Bobby Edwards, other loved nieces and nephews, and a stepdaughter, Sandi Rickmond (Wayne).
The family will receive friends on Monday, May 19, 2025 from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Faulkner Funeral Home, Foster-Faulkner Chapel, Mathews. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel, followed by interment at Windsor Gardens Cemetery, Dutton, Virginia.
