June Atherton King, 93, of Williamsburg VA, formerly of Mathews and Richmond, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 10, 2026. She was preceded in death by her parents, Stanley and Aryls Atherton and her loving husband of 63 years, Maurice (Maury) King. She is survived by her four children, Monica Seay, Mike King (Dana), Kathy Lauver, Beth Downer (Geoff), eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

June was born in Mathews, VA, where she spent her early years, graduating from Mathews High School. She attended Johnston Willis School of Nursing in Richmond to follow her dream of becoming a nurse. While in Richmond, she met the love of her life, Maury and they were married in 1955. She paused her nursing career to raise her 4 children and returned to nursing after her children were grown. While living in Richmond, June was active volunteering with various organizations in the community and supporting her children’s many activities. She enjoyed gardening, the arts and spending time at the “Rivah” house in Hallieford. After retirement, June and Maury returned to Mathews full time to spend their remaining years. In Mathews, she was a devoted member of Mathews Chapel United Methodist Church and a longtime volunteer with Meals on Wheels and Relay for Life, reflecting her deep commitment to serving others. June was a strong and resilient woman surviving both cancer and open-heart surgery.

The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Brookdale Chambrel in Williamsburg and ACG Hospice for the comfort and compassion given to June while in their care.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Faulkner Funeral Homes, Foster-Faulkner Chapel, Mathews, VA, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow in H.C. Smither Memorial Cemetery, Hudgins.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of June to the Alzheimer’s Association or The American Heart Association.
