Paul Figg

December 31, 1969 — June 28, 2022

Paul Edwin Figg, 75, of Locust Hill passed away on Tuesday, June 28, 2022. He was born on February 23, 1947 in Newport News, VA to Edwin C. Figg and Pauline F. Figg. Just like his father, Paul’s love for baseball started at a very young age. He started with Syringa Little League and continued playing ball throughout high school. He was a force to be reckoned with on the mound as a left handed pitcher. Paul was a founding member and starting pitcher for the Virginians, who competed in the Tidewater Baseball League.

After his graduation from Middlesex High School in 1965, Paul accepted a position at Chesapeake Corporation. He was drafted into the Army in April 1966 and served in the Vietnam War until December 1967. During that time, he was awarded four military honors: the National Defense Service Medal, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal with a Bronze Service Star. After returning home from war, Paul returned to his job at Chesapeake Corporation. Paul’s competitive spirit and love for fast cars led him to drag racing. He was known throughout the region for his ability to shift a four-speed transmission, which made his Chevelles unbeatable. Upon his retirement in November 2004, Paul enjoyed spending each day doing whatever he chose to do. Occasionally, he could be spotted at a local convenience store or at Rosie’s but most often, he chose deer hunting, spending time at his hunt club cabin in King and Queen County, buying and trading collectables, spending time with his family and friends and most importantly, just being Paul, otherwise known as Hoss by many.

He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by four siblings: Nancy Freyer and her husband, Walt, Corlis Everett, Mark Figg, and Edwin Figg, Jr. and his wife, Deborah; six nieces and nephews: Robert Vaughan and his wife, Stephanie, Lisa Vaughan, Vail Blake, Virginia Ulsaker and her husband, Oliver, Ashley Hutcheson and her husband, Jesse, and Lauren Figg; and five great nieces and nephews: Nicholas Vaughan, Victoria Vaughan, Katherine Vaughan, Carl Ulsaker and Mary Anne Hutcheson.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, July 3 at Bristow-Faulkner Chapel in Saluda, VA. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will be held at Lower United Methodist Church in Hartfield, VA immediately following the service.

The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to each and every one of Paul’s friends that rallied around him during his illness. Every phone call, visit and act of kindness and love touched him deeply and for that, we will forever be grateful. The family would also like to extend their profound gratitude to the staff at VHS who cared for Paul. To the VHS staff, thank you for caring for Paul as if he were a member of your family. We cherish the friendship formed during his time in your care.
