Phillip Edward Long was born in Alexandria, Virginia, on December 15, 1949, to Rita and William Long. A protective big brother with a playful streak, Phill loved his younger brother, Richard Long dearly, and never missed an opportunity for a good prank.
At just nine years old, a book sparked a dream that would shape Phillip's life: he wanted to work for the U.S. Secret Service. He fulfilled that childhood dream through 31 years of service, becoming a leader in firearms instruction. He was privileged to also serve on Director Lew Merletti's staff. Following retirement from Secret Service, Phillip completed his distinguished career at Camp Perry. His dedication went far beyond teaching skills. He cared deeply for his fellow instructors and for his students, with their safety and preparation for their missions always at the heart of his work.
Phillip and his wife, Peggy Sue, shared 30 years and a beautiful life together. His love of the water brought them homes overlooking the Potomac River and, later, Cobbs Creek. Their beloved Labrador retrievers, Jackson and Brady Rebel, filled his heart for many years. His cherished doodle, Saint Nicholas, was a loving companion who brought him comfort through his final days.
Phill was a loving uncle to Bonnie Jo, Brent, Samantha, Jordan, Donnie, and Sarah and great uncle to Alex and Jake. His generosity was unmistakable. Gifts were his love language, and he showered those he loved with thoughtful surprises-sometimes more than they knew what to do with. Each gift was another way of letting someone know they mattered to him.
Nowhere was that generous spirit more evident than at Christmas, his favorite holiday. Phill celebrated with his whole heart, and packages seemed to spill into every corner of the house. For him, there was always room for one more gift and one more reason to make someone smile. To those who knew and loved him, he truly was Santa.
With his sense of humor and beautiful, deep voice, Phill drew people to him. He was also a gifted photographer and artist, capturing precious moments and giving family and friends photographs they will treasure for a lifetime.
Above all, Phillip loved truly and deeply: his wife, his family, his students, his friends, and his pets. His love lives on in the people he taught, the memories he captured, and the many lives he touched. For all of you that loved Phill, please remember "he loved you more".
A gathering to celebrate Phill's life will be held in the spring. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation in Phill's memory to the Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad, 94 Cricket Hill Rd, Hudgins, VA 23076 or the Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society, PO Box 385, Gloucester, VA 23061.
