Robert Franklin

November 7, 1929 — April 22, 2022

Robert Eugene Franklin, 92, of Champlain, Virginia passed away at home on Friday, April 22nd, 2022.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Phillip Segar Franklin and Myrtle Hortense Franklin; his sister, Mildred Rebrick; and his loving wife of 68 years, Mabel Dameron Franklin.

He is survived by his daughter, Mary Beth Lowery (Michael), sons Robert D. Franklin, and Paul B. Franklin (Becket); his grandchildren Rebecca Kim (Dan), Christopher Lowery (Caitlin), Paul Lowery (Julie), Tyler Franklin (Corbin), Josh Franklin (Caitlin), Rachel Neal (Taylor), Paul B. Franklin, Jr. (Kathryn) and Henry Franklin; and eleven great grandchildren, Matthew, Samuel, Nate, Teagan, Pierce, Hudson, Harper, Virginia Rose, Larkin, Reagan, and Cameron. He is also survived by his sisters Evelyn Gayle, Phyllis Dishman, Josephine King, sisters-in-law Anne Finnegan (Dan) and Frances Dameron, and a large extended family.

Born in Richmond County in 1929, he was class president at Warsaw High School, graduating in 1947.

He farmed all of his life, retiring to his home at Faver Field Farm in Essex County.

He served the community as a member of the Essex County School Board from 1968 to 1978. He worked to help achieve the integration of the school system and the construction of Essex High School.

He was a member of Upper Essex Baptist Church for most of his life. The fellowship he built and enjoyed there went far beyond the weekly routine.

He loved to plant, cultivate and harvest, working with God’s gifts of the soil, water, seed and sun.

The outdoors and nature were a central part of his life.

He was an avid hunter. In his later years, he passed up shots on game that were still his for the taking: his aim was true to his last days. He loved to hear whistling duck wings at dawn and to see a silently moving deer at dusk. He enjoyed the fellowship of the hunt and the sound of the dogs on the chase.

While fishing, a bite would cause him to gasp with excitement, whether a citation rockfish or a middling perch.

He was a conservationist and true steward of the land. He and Mabel managed the farm operation while also ensuring wildlife were healthy and plentiful.

He was a man of few words but had a gift for storytelling. When he spoke, everyone fell silent to hear what he would say.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, April 27th, 2022 at Warsaw Baptist Church Cemetery. Donations in his memory may be made to Upper Essex Baptist Church, P.O. Box 225, Caret, Virginia, 22436. Faulkner Funeral Homes, Marks-Bristow Chapel, Tappahannock, assisted the family with arrangements.
