LCDR Roland Wade Callis USCG (retired) set sail for far more peaceful waters early Sunday morning, October 19, 2025 at the ripe age of 85. He was born in Onemo, Virginia to George Haywood and Inez Diggs Callis on July 19, 1940. He met the love of his life in high school and he and Marlene Hodges were married in 1960. He enlisted in the Coast Guard in 1958 and found great satisfaction in having gone through Officer Candidate School to become an officer. He served 20 years as a career couple and family of the United States Coast Guard. They moved to various locations around America. They were married for 54 years when Marlene passed away in 2014. This union produced Lisa Michelle Callis Lewis and David Wade Callis.
Roland was predeceased by his parents and wife, Marlene.
He is survived by his children, Lisa Lewis (John Craig) and Captain David Callis (Carla) both of Mathews. Additionally, he found great joy in his grandchildren to whom he was Pop, Cori Callis Williams (Chester), Malia Lewis Rhodes (Chase) and Luke Lewis. He was called Big Pop by his great-grandchildren, Dominic and Jocelyn Williams. He is also survived by his sister, Barbara Chapman (Jimmy); a sister-in-law, Renee Callis (Skip) and as well as cherished nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, October 26, 2025 from 5:00 p.m.to 7:00 p.m. at Faulkner Funeral Homes, Foster-Faulkner Chapel, Mathews. A funeral service will be held on Monday, October 27, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at Gwynn’s Island Baptist Church, burial to follow in Gwynn’s Island Cemetery. A reception will follow in the church social hall.
