Susie Hayes King

Susie Hayes King, 92, departed this life August 28, 2026. She was born on August 27, 1934, in Dunnsville, VA. to Della B. Hayes and Amon H. Hayes.

At a young age, she met and married Charles M. Schools, Jr. and together they had three sons, Charles (Chuck), Michael (Mike), and Bruce. In 1985, she married Ernest J. King. They were married for over 32 years until his death in 2018.

Susie was an avid gardener who enjoyed raising and preserving vegetables. She loved flowers and planted beautiful flower gardens every year she was able to do so. She loved to cook and delighted her family, especially her grandchildren, with her savory dishes as well as the delicious pies she often made for them.

She was a reader, who took special interest in inspirational stories. Susie loved to converse with people she found interesting and often expressed appreciation for opportunities to learn new things from those who visited or called her.

She was preceded in death by her husband Charles Schools and by her sons, Bruce Scott Schools and Charles Mason Schools. Her husband, Ernest King, also preceded her in death, as well as her brothers Amon M. Hayes and Harlan C. Hayes.

Susie is survived by her son, John Michael Schools (Carol), her daughter-in-law Janet Schools; grandchildren, Jackee Schools, Jason Schools (Kristina), Eric Schools (Michelle), Caitlin Wilson (David), Caroline Shull (Adam), and Alyssa Pope (Aaron); great-grandchildren: Mackenzie, Andrew, Daniel, Hannah, Ian and Joshua. Also surviving is her sister, Gabriella (Jerry) Rakes as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Services for Susie will be held Saturday, September 5th, 2026 at Marks-Bristow Funeral Home in Tappahannock, VA with the family receiving visitors at 1:00 p.m. and the funeral beginning at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Robert Belcher officiating. Interment will be at Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery in Dunbrooke, VA.
