Thomas Stephen Wash

Thomas Stephen Wash, 76, of Deltaville, VA passed away peacefully at his home on the morning of Friday, August 28th, 2026. 

Tom was surrounded by family in his final hours. He was preceded in death by his parents, Stanley and Veronica; a sister, Linda; and his wife of 48 years, Paula. 

Tom is survived by his wife, Catherine; his son, Paul (Julie Ann); his daughter, Becca (Glenn); grandchildren Anne-Kinsey and Ned; and a sister, Laura. He is also survived by a stepson, Trevor; stepdaughter, Hannah (Richie); and their son Samuel. 

Tom was born in Brooklyn, NY on August 27th, 1950. His family later moved to Queens. Tom played basketball and baseball while in school. He also developed a love for the ocean and cars. From swimming laps at Rockaway Beach to driving his yellow Mustang between boroughs in NYC, Tom loved life. Tom moved to Richmond, VA in 1971. Driven by an incredible work ethic and a fierce commitment to provide for his young family, Tom worked full-time by day and took classes at VCU by night, earning his associate’s degree and then his bachelor’s. Tom was at the forefront of IT, specializing in large, high-performance financial database systems. He was an SVP with Wells Fargo when he retired in 2016.

During his weekends, Tom was usually tinkering with something on a vehicle. He added a garage to his Richmond home which soon became filled with all things cars and mechanical. It was very rare that he didn’t have the tool you needed. Tom loved vacationing in Hatteras, NC, which he started visiting in the early 80s. Those vacations were filled with swimming, fishing, and lots of good food. Those trips have become a family tradition and continue today. Tom was also an avid scuba diver (a certified Divemaster), a hobby he shared with his son Paul. He dove many times in the Bahamas and Little Cayman, but his ultimate favorite was Hatteras wreck diving.

Tom purchased a weekend home in Deltaville in 2004. He enjoyed boating and always looked forward to rockfish season. After retirement, Tom moved permanently to Deltaville. He would spend time working on his powerboat, fishing with buddies, and learning to cook. If you knew Tom, you knew he loved food. He never missed a meal. His love for cars really took off as he started collecting Ford Mustangs. Tom always loved basketball and was a big fan of VCU, attending many games. He loved traveling, and in addition to his trips to Hatteras, he visited the BVIs and USVIs, Bermuda, and Hilton Head many times. 

Tom was a strong man of integrity and lived his life to the fullest. He faced his illness with incredible bravery, grace, and a deep love for Christ. God welcomed him into the gates of heaven with open arms.

 A celebration of life will be held on Thursday, September 3rd at 12 p.m. at Clarksbury Church in Deltaville, VA. In honor of Tom, please wear your favorite colors. A reception will follow in the church hall.
